Art Hotels

Design-led hotels where art is built into the rooms, not hung as an afterthought.

  1. Hotel Lone

    Rovinj, Croatia

Concrete terraces step down toward the Adriatic on the southern edge of Rovinj. The Croatian studio 3LHD designed the building, which opened in 2011 beside the Golden Cape forest park, a protected stretch of pines and rocky shoreline.

Art arrives here through design rather than gallery walls. Much of the furniture, lighting and fabric was commissioned from Croatian designers, and Lone became the first hotel in the country to join the Design Hotels group. Rooms open onto balconies. The old town is a short walk around the bay.

  2. Hotel Greif

    Bolzano, Italy

An inn has stood on this corner of Piazza Walther, Bolzano's main square, for generations. The present hotel took shape in the 1990s, when the Viennese architect Boris Podrecca joined several older buildings into one.

Its 33 rooms are the reason it belongs on this list. Each one was conceived with a different contemporary artist, so no two look alike: one might hold large canvases, another a run of drawings, a third a single installation. Breakfast looks out over the square.

  3. Hotel Spadari al Duomo

    Milan, Italy

A family runs this small hotel on Via Spadari, a few minutes on foot from Milan Cathedral and the glass-roofed Galleria.

Paintings and works on paper by Italian artists hang through the rooms and lounges, many drawn from the owners' own collection. Interiors lean on calm blues and greens, with furniture made for the building. The effect is a quiet counterweight to the crowds two streets away.
